Every year in February several hundreds volunteers representing various historical societies from Poland and abroad participate in a staging of the Battle of Olszynka Grochowska.
The battle took place on February 25, 1831 when approx. 40.000 of Polish forces defended Warsaw from the invading 60.000 Russian soldiers. After 2 days of heavy fighting with considerable losses on both sides, both armies withdrew. The battle was part of so-called November Uprising of 1830, an armed rebellion against Russian rule. The November Uprising was eventually defeated and Poland gained independence as late as in 1918.
The battle was reconstructed on its 175th and 176th anniversary with participants wearing historical costumes and using copies of original weapons.
