Kraków has been the capital of Poland and the royal seat from the 11 th century. Its Renaissance, Gothic and Baroque architecture was recognised by UNESCO, which put the Old Town and Jewish Kazimierz district on the list of World Heritage Sites. Kraków is most famous of its cultural, academic and spiritual heritage. It is proud of Jagiellonian University, one of the oldest in Europe, and its distinguished residents: Nobel prize winning poets Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska, writer Stanisław Lem, composers Krzysztof Penderecki and Zbigniew Preisner and Karol Wojtyła - John Paul II.
